LAB FOR CHANGE

LABORATORIO PARA EL CAMBIO

We design narratives, places, and experiences.

We support individuals and organizations in the ideation, inquiry, and implementation of processes for change.

We cultivate transformations in the ways of understanding and making worlds.

We seek futures where life thrives in cooperation, diversity, and respect.

We are an independent, self-organizing organization that emerges according to the characteristics of each process and intervention to be developed.

We take part in a borderless network with our home base in Mexico City.

PROJECTS

  • Minitectura
    System for Self-Built Housing

We have developed a construction system using small-dimension wood, harvested and sawn with simple technologies. The wooden pieces are placed horizontally to form curved structures (semi-spherical or conical), which are assembled with cable or rope. The system allows a dwelling to be built by two people without prior construction knowledge.

Because the elements are “woven,” the wooden pieces can be assembled and disassembled to create different housing structures according to present needs.

The structures can be covered with local materials, depending on their intended use and the climatic conditions of their location.

The forest management and wood-product system is designed to regenerate three times the amount of natural materials and energy used in the creation of each dwelling. We also focus on using primarily simple, local materials that require minimal processing (wood, palm, earth, straw, cotton, beeswax, lime, wool, among others).

We follow a “make–unmake” design philosophy, which ensures that every piece of the construction system can be reused or reintegrated into nature without disrupting any life cycle.

We already have a full-scale functional prototype and are about to begin designing the second version.

  • Consensus Gentium
Series of  XR interactive narratives and research laboratories, created by artist Karen Palmer.

The first narrative, Consensus Gentium, has been recognized with the Jury Award in the XR section of SXSW 2023, an Honorable Mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2024, and the Breakthrough Prize from DIGITAL DOZEN 2024.

We collaborated with critical creativity in the development of the worldbuilding and participatory narrative design of the first piece, as well as in subsequent presentations and research labs.

The project is ongoing, and we are currently collaborating on the design of the second installation.

  • Laboratorio Vivo
Action-research in the design and management of eco-technologies and agroecological gardens.

We collaborate with Lola Sosa to develop and research “green infrastructure with simple and living technology”. We are researching greywater treatment; harvesting and management of organic waste through different types of composting; rainwater collection and storage; soil improvement through plants; food forests; among others.

Currently, the complete set of green infrastructures for the Laboratory for Change building in Mexico City is being designed.

  • Productora de Onda
Community of practice for learning and creation of audiovisual storytelling.

We seek to support students and non-professionals in joining efforts to develop practice-based learning experiences, while also strengthening awareness of the impact that media and its content have on our social and environmental relationships.

We connect production houses, schools, professionals, equipment rental companies, music studios, and more to facilitate audiovisual practice opportunities for our members.

The project is currently in the research and ideation phase.
